The Garrett County Public Schools Food & Nutrition Department is proud to announce the success of its Summer Food Service program, which served over 200,000 meals to children in the area this summer. With an average of almost 900 children per week, the program was able to provide a vital source of nutrition to the community during the summer months.
Thanks to a generous grant from No Kid Hungry/Share Our Strength, funded by Food Lion and totaling $121,000, the program was able to purchase a new van and add additional distribution sites. This allowed the program to reach even more families in need, providing them with not only meals but also fresh, locally sourced produce.
The program will also continue its partnership with Garrett Growers, thanks to a Local Foods grant from the Maryland State Department of Education and the United States Department of Agriculture totaling $65,000. This grant will allow the program to purchase even more local foods during the coming school year, ensuring that students receive nutritious and delicious meals.
The Garrett County Public Schools Food & Nutrition Department is committed to serving the community and providing access to healthy food for all students. We are proud of the success of our Summer Food Service program and look forward to continuing our efforts in the future.
