FREE ATV Helmet Program Now Available for Riders Ages 15-24 (While Supplies Last)

The Garrett County Health Department’s Health, Education, and Outreach Unit is promoting rider safety through its “Head First” initiative, offering free ATV helmets to qualifying residents. This program, funded by the Maryland Department of Health Core State Injury Prevention Program, aims to protect young riders by providing essential safety gear at no cost.

Eligibility and Requirements

To participate in this offer, individuals must be Garrett County residents between the ages of 15 and 24. The process for securing a helmet involves three primary steps:

  • Interested participants must register with Amy Ritchie by calling 301-334-7730 ext. 6526.
  • Riders are required to complete the free online 2-hour ATV Safety Institute E-Course.
  • Upon completion, the certificate must be submitted to amy.ritchie@maryland.gov to receive a voucher for a free helmet.

Limited Availability

This offer is drawing to a close soon, with a deadline of May 25, 2026. While the program initially had more openings, there are currently only 5 spots remaining. Vouchers provided through this program can be redeemed at the Aquatic Center located in McHenry, Maryland.
