A two-year undertaking is coming to fruition. A dedication and celebration of Bethel Center, formerly the Bethel A.M.E. Church, first dedicated in 1900, will be held on Monday, September 23, 2024. The time will be announced soon. The former church once served an African American congregation at the turn of the twentieth century. After closing its doors in the 1930s, it was disassembled and relocated to a farm in Pleasant Valley, where it became a wheelwright shop until 2022. Deemed no longer usable by its owners, the town of Mountain Lake Park quickly acted to save the church and relocate it to a beautiful shaded lot overlooking Maryland Highway in the Historic District of the town. Bethel Center will be a place to remember and honor the African American community that was an integral part of Garrett County's early years of development around the railroad industry. The dedication is free and open to the public. Distinguished guest speakers will make for a memorial kick-off event.
