Deep Creek Dunk – A Cool Event in Support of Local Athletes

Deep Creek Lake is turning 100 in 2025, and the Deep Creek Lake Centennial (DCL100) is celebrating all year long with events that highlight the lake’s history, community, and natural beauty. One of the year’s first festivities, the DCL100 committee is teaming up with Special Olympics Maryland for the 2nd Annual Community Dunk and the 26th Annual MSP/NPR Deep Creek Dunk, bringing a special element to this beloved winter event series on February 20, 21 and 22, 2025.

Now an annual tradition, the Dunk invites locals and visitors to take a plunge into the icy waters of Deep Creek Lake, all while raising funds to support the more than 19,800 athletes and Unified® teammates of Special Olympics Maryland.

On Thursday, February 20, from 3:00 – 5:00 PM, the DCL100 committee is participating in a special Community Dunk, inviting local residents to show their Deep Creek spirit. To make it even more fun, DCL100 will award a “Best Community Spirit” prize to the team with the most participants! Whether you’re dunking solo or gathering a team, it’s a great way to kick off the weekend. I, personally, have been fundraising for a few weeks but it’s not too late to join, as on-site registration is available for a $75 fee.

Since 1999, the Deep Creek Dunk has been a highlight of winter, drawing brave souls ready to jump into the frigid lake to support a great cause. This year’s main Dunk event will take place on Saturday, February 22, from 11:00 AM – 3:00 PM at the Honi Honi.

DCL100 is bringing some centennial flair to the festivities by awarding a “Best Roaring ’20s Costume” prize to the team with the most creative nod to the lake’s founding era. Winners will receive a custom trophy and a special DCL100 prize pack, including a limited-edition centennial coin, pin, patch, sticker, magnet, keychain, and wallet.

As previously announced, participants are advised to come early and secure a free parking spot at Garrett 8 Cinemas. To save time, you can already print out your waiver form and present it at the registration booth. The Deep Creek Dunk will begin distributing packets (which include a Dunk sweatshirt and a wristband) and collecting signed waivers on February 21, 2025, from 6:00 – 9:00 PM at the Honi-Honi parking lot. Dunkers are urged to pre-register and pick up their packet kit in advance to avoid long lines on the day of the event.

While you’re there, join in the celebration! Grab wine or beer at the Goosebumps, Grapes & Growlers wine-tasting event, managed by the Honi Honi Bar and Uno’s Pizzeria and Grill. Enjoy the music led by the Honi Honi Band starting at 8:00 PM.

Deep Creek Lake has come a long way in 100 years. What began as a man-made reservoir with little aquatic life has flourished into a thriving ecosystem, home to diverse fish species, wildlife, and a vibrant recreational scene. Thanks to environmental protections and community-wide efforts, the lake remains one of Maryland’s top destinations for fishing, boating, and year-round adventure.

DCL100 is dedicated to celebrating the lake’s history while ensuring its future health and sustainability. Events like the Deep Creek Dunk not only bring people together but also highlight the importance of preserving this natural treasure for generations to come.

This event is a great excuse to have fun during this chilly and sometimes dreaded season. So, join us and DO THE DUNK!
