The Garrett County Public Schools (GCPS) APPROVED 2024-25 school year calendar, developed by the GCPS Calendar Committee, is now available for review on the Public Relations page of our website. www.gcps.net/public-relations. The Calendar Committee met in January and consisted of parents, staff, administrators, a Board member, and the Student Board member.
The calendar boasts a post-Labor Day start, with students returning to school on September 3, 2024, and school tentatively ending on June 6, 2025. Professional development days (three-hour early student dismissal) are scheduled each month. At this time, the 91st day of school will be a three-hour early dismissal for students. As in past practice, make-up days are tentative and will be determined by the GCBOE.
Parent-Teacher Conferences will be held once, on January 30, 2025, tentatively planned to occur from 11:00 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. All major holidays are also school holidays. Additional holidays include October 13 (Autumn Glory Friday), December 2, 2024 (Thanksgiving Monday), and April 21, 2025 (Easter Monday).
Three make-up days are scheduled during the school year to account for potential inclement weather: January 20, February 17, and April 21, 2025. These make-up dates are marked with snowflakes on the calendar and will be used in numerical order as possible make-up days, starting with January 20, 2025. Since it’s impossible to predict inclement weather days or emergency system-wide closings, it is recommended that vacations not be scheduled until at least after June 13th to avoid any scheduling conflicts. If additional days are needed, the school year will extended to meet the state requirement of 180 days.
