Financial Aid Information for College Students

The Financial Aid Office at Garrett College will offer free assistance with completing the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) application on December 18th from 5 p.m. until 7 p.m. at the College’s McHenry campus in Room 306. Computers will be available to help complete the process.  The FAFSA night is open to anyone, regardless of which college he or she is considering attending.  The process is the same for all schools, and a student may list up to 10 schools to receive their information once he or she submits the FAFSA.

“Although, the state of Maryland has not changed its deadlines, early applications are always better,” stated Cissy VanSickle, Director of Student Financial Aid at Garrett College. “Students and parents should also check with the school for which they are applying for admission to see if the school or schools have early deadlines for completing the FAFSA.”

As a reminder, the FAFSA can be completed online at www.fafsa.ed.gov. Both the student and at least one parent will need an FSAID to submit the FAFSA. One can setup their FSAID ahead of time or at the same time he or she is completing the FAFSA at www.fsaid.ed.gov.

One reminder that families need to keep in mind is the Maryland March 1st deadline for state aid – don’t miss out on these important scholarship dollars – finish your FAFSA today!   Any student who wants to be considered for Maryland scholarships is highly encouraged to create an account with the Maryland Higher Education Commission by going to www.mdcaps.mhec.state.md.us.

Students planning to attend Garrett College should also apply for the Garrett County Scholarship Program and Garrett College Foundation Scholarships. Applications for both of these scholarships are available in the guidance offices at Southern and Northern High School and on the financial aid section of the Garrett College website, which also includes additional scholarship links and resources that are available to students. Those who are considering applying for foundation or other private scholarships, are highly encouraged to develop an essay, mapping out his or her educational goals and plans.

For additional information on how to submit the FAFSA, or the upcoming FAFSA night on December 18, may contact the Garrett College Financial Aid Office at 301-387-3080.

Are you a FUN home/property owner who dreams of having a grown-up treehouse?!  A well-known TV show that documents the building of custom-designed, ADULT-centric treehouses is accepting submissions for its next season!  These magnificent structures (designed and built by our host and his company) are often like mini-homes, complete with electricity and water.  There is no exact tree equation, but typically trees that are – VERY TALL, and big vs. skinny, with high vs. low branches – work better.  For more info on the build company’s price points, and to submit to be on the show visit: https://treehousemasters.wufoo.com/forms/mpcnlvi1n3xekr/

Deep Creek Lake and Garrett County, Maryland Sees Increases From Post-Labor Day School Start; Tourism Still on Record Trajectory

The first quarter of Fiscal Year 2018 (July 1, 2017 – June 30, 2018) is off to a good start for tourism in the Deep Creek lake area and Garrett County, Maryland with a 5.9% increase in county accommodations sales, a 19.6% increase in heads on beds, a 8.5% increase in visitors to the Chamber’s website, visitdeepcreek.com and a 17% increase in Visitor Guide requests. While the Chamber attributes much of the continued growth in tourism to aggressive marketing efforts and new ad strategies, the newly implemented post-Labor Day start for Maryland Public Schools is also being credited with the increases.

With Maryland students returning to school after Labor Day rather than in mid-to- late August, Garrett County saw an 11% increase in county accommodations collections in August 2017 over August 2016, a 53% increase in heads on beds and an 8.3% increase in sales tax collections.

“Anecdotally, we knew that Garrett County was seeing a positive economic impact from the later school start and now we have the empirical data,” said Nicole Christian, Chamber president & CEO.  “Garrett County is capitalizing on our continued aggressive marketing strategies coupled with pro-growth policies like the post Labor Day school, as evidenced by the tourism increases for the first quarter of FY 18.”

Garrett County experienced similar tourism increases in fiscal year 2017 (July 1, 2016 – June 30, 2017) with a 6.9% increase in county accommodations sales, a 8.6% increase in heads on bedsa 3.6% increase in sales tax collections and a 41% increase in Visitor Guide requests.

According to the Maryland Office of Tourism, Garrett County’s increases even outpaced Maryland’s tourism growth. For Fiscal Year 2017 (July 1, 2016 – June 30, 2017), Maryland grew sales tax revenues specific to tourism 4.1%, while Garrett County grew tourism sales tax revenues 6.8% during the same time period. Maryland grew lodging sales tax code collections 6.0% and restaurant sales tax code collections 3.0% while Garrett County grew lodging sales tax collections 8.7% and restaurant sales tax code collections 5.6%.

“These ongoing increases in tourism growth for Garrett County have even been recognized by the State by way of increased advertising dollars through our County Cooperative Marketing Match Grant,” said Christian. “We now receive the 7th highest grant amount in the State behind only Ocean City, Worchester County, Baltimore City, Baltimore County, Anne Arundel County and Prince George’s County. That is impressive for such a small county.”

The western-most county in Maryland, Garrett County is home to Maryland’s largest freshwater lake, Deep Creek Lake, Wisp Resort, the state’s only ski resort, and Adventure Sports Center International, one of only two recirculating whitewater courses in the western hemisphere. MOUNTAIN MARYLAND PACE 2018: Positive Attitudes Change Everything

PACE 2018 IS UNDERWAY

The Cumberland/Allegany County Industrial Foundation, Inc. (CACIF) and the Garrett County Development Corporation proudly host PACE. National Weather Service recognizes Garrett County, Maryland as StormReady®

National Weather Service officials have recognized Garrett County, Maryland as a StormReady® community. Fred McMullen, Warning Coordination of the National Weather Service forecast office in Pittsburgh will present county officials with a recognition letter and special StormReady signs during a ceremony at the Garrett County Courthouse Public Meeting Room on Monday, December 4, 2017 at 4:00 p.m.

“StormReady encourages communities to take a proactive approach to improving local hazardous weather operations and public awareness in partnership with their local National Weather Service office,” McMullen said. The nationwide community preparedness program uses a grassroots approach to help communities develop plans to handle local severe weather and flooding threats.

The program is voluntary and provides communities with clear-cut advice from the local National Weather Service forecast office and state and local emergency managers. The program began in 1999 with seven communities in the Tulsa, Oklahoma. area. Today, there are more than 2,600 StormReady communities’ nationwide and 18 counties in Maryland. “The program is designed to help StormReady communities improve communication and safety skills needed to save lives — before, during and after a severe weather event,” said Fred McMullen, Warning Coordination Meteorologist for the forecast office.

To be recognized as StormReady, a community must establish a 24-hour warning point and emergency operations center; have more than one way to receive severe weather forecasts and warnings and to alert the public; create a system that monitors local weather conditions; promote the importance of public readiness through community seminars; and, develop a formal hazardous weather plan, which includes training severe weather spotters and holding emergency exercises. Disaster preparedness is everyone’s responsibility.

Educating yourself and your family on environmental hazards, maintaining a disaster supply kit, and having an emergency plan in place, are all proactive ways you can be better prepared. The StormReady program is part of NOAA National Weather Service’s working partnership with the International Association of Emergency Managers and the National Emergency Management Association.

The StormReady recognition will expire in three years, after which the county will go through a renewal process.
