Weather today will be party cloudy, warm, with highs in the lower 70s.

But winter is coming! AccuWeather is forecasting a chilly winter is in store for the Northeast and mid-Atlantic, particularly when compared to last year. For most of both regions, this will translate to an above-normal snow season.

The Garrett County Chamber of Commerce Kick-Off Dinner for the 50th Annual Autumn Glory Festival is next Wednesday, October 11, 2017. The registration deadline is this Friday, October 6th.

Governor Larry Hogan announced yesterday that the Board of Public Works unanimously adopted a Maryland Department of Natural Resources recommendation approving 17 Rural Legacy Program grants – totaling over $23 million. One of the grants, for $1.3 million, will go to the Bear Creek Legacy Area in GARRETT County.

Best of luck to a new business in downtown Oakland. The Downtown Bakery and Fresh Market opens this weekend at 221 Alder Street in Oakland. The hours are Wednesday through Saturday 8:30am to 2:00pm. Fresh pastries, pies, breads and cookies are available daily, plus other goodies too.

According to the Department of Natural resources, cooler water temperatures at Deep Creek Lake have smallmouth and largemouth bass more active and roaming in transition areas. Tubes, spinnerbaits, small crankbaits and jigs are good choices near deep grass, rocky bottom and the few remaining floating docks. Cooler temperatures throughout the state are creating fishing opportunities.

Juli McCoy has been named the new Executive Director of the County United Way – serving Garrett, Allegany, Mineral and Hampshire Counties.

Garrett College recently announced that Mr. Aaron Clark, Maryland Department of Veterans Affairs, Veterans Benefit Specialist, will be at Garrett College, on Wednesday, October 11, 9:30am – 1:30pm. Clark will also make future visits to GC the second Wednesday of every month. Additional support staff will also be visiting at various times each month to help Veterans.
