Yesterday was hot! My thermometer registered 88 degrees in the afternoon. Today’s weather will be mostly sunny, with a high near 83 and a low around 67. Isolated showers or thunderstorms before 11pm; chance of precipitation is 20%.

The Mountain Fresh Farmer’s Market is open at the Pavilion in downtown Oakland today from 10:00am – 1:00pm.

Never give up hope Toto!  A pair of ruby slippers that Judy Garland wore in the 1939 classic The Wizard of Oz and that were stolen 13 years ago have been recovered by the FBI. I am hoping for a beautiful Fall at the lake and then a wonderful winter for all.

There’s a HeartSaver course at the Kitzmiller branch of the Ruth Enlow Library today from 3:00pm – 7:00pm.  The course covers First Aid, CPR, and AED and is free to the first seven people to register. Contact Diane at 301.334.8091 or email at diane@relib.net to register.

Even in our peaceful country location addiction happens. While low compared to our urban and suburban neighbors, there were 15 drug and alcohol related deaths in Garrett County during 2016 – 2018. The County Health Department has some good programs and people working to help addicts, families and the community.

Allegany and Garrett county public schools are the only two school systems in the state with a pre-Labor day start. Since 2016, Governor Hogan initiated a post-Labor Day start for the rest of the state and said he sees no reason to change since the move has been well received. Allegany and Garrett have applied for a waivers each year in anticipating challenging winter weather.

New Board Members have been announced to serve on the Deep Creek Lake Watershed Foundation.

On Monday, September 10th from 5:30-7:30 pm at the Oakland Library, learn strategies for researching family history and finding that missing branch on the family tree at the genealogy course.

From the new to the old: Here’s a recent photo of the Baldwin 1920 Steam Engine in place at the Oakland B&O Museum sent in by Terry Helbig from the museum. They have made great progress on restoration and don’t forget that there will be a ribbon cutting and dedication at 11:00am on September 18th.
