The Garrett 250 Commission is inviting community members to participate in one of the most meaningful moments of the Garrett 250 Birthday Bash: Celebrating America Together on Saturday, July 18, at the Garrett County Fairgrounds.
As part of the county’s official commemoration of America’s 250th anniversary, volunteers are being sought for “A County United,” a ceremonial unfurling of a large American field flag honoring veterans, community, and 250 years of American history.
The ceremony is designed to bring together residents from every corner of Garrett County in a visible expression of unity, patriotism, and gratitude for the generations who have shaped both the nation and the county. Volunteers will have the honor of helping unfurl and hold the flag during the ceremony, creating a powerful visual tribute to service, sacrifice, and community pride.
“America’s 250th anniversary is a once-in-a-generation opportunity to reflect on where we’ve been, celebrate who we are, and look ahead to the future,” said Sarah Myers, Chair of the Garrett 250 Commission. “We hope residents of all ages will consider joining us for this special moment as we come together as one county and one community.”
Adult volunteers are needed to assist with carrying, holding, and maneuvering the field flag. Youth ages 14 and older are also invited to participate beneath the flag during the ceremony. Participants must be able to stand for an extended period outdoors and attend both a rehearsal and the event itself.
Tentative schedule information includes:
- Rehearsal: Friday, July 17 (pizza provided)
- Ceremony: Saturday, July 18 (inclusion in the official record and free t-shirt included)
- Location: Garrett County Fairgrounds
Final instructions and arrival times will be shared with registered volunteers during the week of July 13.
The flag ceremony will take place during the Garrett 250 Birthday Bash, a countywide celebration featuring live music, family activities, town exhibits, veteran tributes, a patriotic concert, food vendors, and a finale drone show. The event is intended to honor the diverse people, places, and stories that have shaped Garrett County and the United States over the past 250 years.
Community members interested in participating can register online at Garrett250.com or contact Sarah Myers at smyers@garrettcountymd.gov for additional information.
