Funds were allocated to the DNR to conduct a pilot test of mechanical harvesting of near-shore SAV. The first phase was completed on 8/18-19. Attached are some photos and a description of what was done in three separate areas of the lake. Based on this testing and the planned follow-up study, a plan will hopefully be formulated for the future control of near-shore SAV by the DNR.
DNR and its contractor executed their shallow water nuisance SAV mechanical harvesting over the last couple of days.
The DNR SAV team identified, assessed, and marked off three areas for the pilot project, which included shallow, intermediate, and deeper water sites for sampling. This was done on Monday.
The actual SAV cutting was conducted on Tuesday. DNR Fisheries staff examined and evaluated the cut SAV material for potential impacts to fish.
The DNR SAV team will evaluate the areas cut.
The plan is for the contractor to return to DCL in September to conduct another SAV harvesting in the same areas.
