Thursday January 4

Looks like it will remain bitterly cold plus a bit snowy and windy today. Accumulations of about an inch with high temperatures of 7 degrees and winds gusting to 40mph.

We get our weather real-time from the Garrett College weather station. It is important to note that weather patterns – temperature, precipitation, wind, etc. – can vary greatly within our County due to the mountains and the lake. We heard various places across our county and nearby West Virginia (Canaan Valley) had temperature variances in excess of 30 degrees yesterday. Crazy!

It’s Team Trivia Night tonight from 6:00pm – 8:00pm at Mountain State Brewing Company in McHenry. You can compete for prizes with your team and it is all free.

We don’t and can’t give measures of ice thickness, but we thought we would share this recent photo taken from Brenda’s Pizzeria yesterday afternoon. Note the large “fissure” of seemingly open water and/or clear ice. There have been a number of these seen on the lake, even during this cold spell, likely due to movement of the ice mass and water under the ice. Think of plate tectonics and earthquakes. Please be careful.

Is Deep Creek Lake Frozen

Brookfield Renewable Partners, owner-operator of Deep Creek Hydroelectric, issued a reminder “strongly encouraging recreators to stay well away from the area of the dam and the powerhouse in the interest of public safety. There are inherent dangers and risks around waterways in general, and particularly near dams and hydropower facilities.”

The Deep Creek School of Real Estate is asking for input on timing for scheduling the first new agent class of 2018. It’s a 60-hour class open to anyone with the drive to soar.

A free session, led by the Maryland Heritage Areas Authority, will provide an opportunity to learn more about the FY 2018 grant program and the online application. The event will be held at the Chamber’s Visitor’s Center in McHenry on January 17th starting at 1:00pm.

Winter Fest is coming back to Oakland in February. Sculptures will be out downtown early on Saturday, February 17th and will stay out until they melt in August (just kidding). Contact Michelle Ross of GOBA at 301.334.2691 or mainstreetgoba@gmail.com to sponsor an ice sculpture.
