- Keep the Feast on the Table—Not Under It: Turkey or turkey skin—even a small amount—can cause pancreatitis in pets, a serious condition. If you’d like to give your pet a holiday treat, consider making or buying a special snack just for them! Foods that are fine for us can be harmful to pets, including:
- Onions
- Raisins
- Grapes
- No Sweet Treats: Chocolate is toxic to pets, and many pups will sniff it out if it’s around! Watch out for the sweetener xylitol (commonly in gum and sugar-free baked goods), which can also be life-threatening for dogs and cats.
- Skip the Bread Dough: Yeast dough can cause painful gas and dangerous bloating in pets. Keep unbaked bread or dough well out of reach.
- Be Cautious with Decorative Plants: Thanksgiving tables are often adorned with beautiful fall plants, but some are toxic to pets. Popular plants to avoid include Autumn Crocus, Chrysanthemums, and even acorns from oak trees. Check any floral arrangements for pet-safe choices!
- Traveling with Pets: Traveling with pets can be tricky, especially if crossing state or international borders. Make sure to research requirements, and if driving, secure them with a harness or carrier.
