Swallow Falls State Park Access

UPDATED 5/23/24: A temporary one-lane bridge has been placed on the entrance road of Swallow Falls State Park. All traffic exiting the park must yield to traffic entering the park. Please be patient and follow all posted signage. If the line of traffic extends to the main road, do not block the road

Visitors are encouraged to use alternative access points and explore nearby attractions. The campground will remain closed until the road is fully repaired and the closure has extended through October 2025.

Alternative Access Points:

  1. Swallow Falls Alternative Entrance
    • Distance: 5.5 miles, approximately 13+ minutes away
    • Route: Cranesville Rd to Maple Glade Rd
    • CAUTION: This is a single-lane gravel road with limited spots to pull off and turn around. It is not recommended for cars or campers.
  2. Fisherman’s Trail
    • Directions: Head east from the park entrance, drive across the bridge over the Youghiogheny River, and find a small parking lot on the right. Cross the road to access the trail.
    • Features: Provides views of three out of the four waterfalls in Swallow Falls State Park.
    • CAUTION: Limited parking available. Do not park along the road.
  3. Herrington Manor State Park
    • Distance: 3.5 miles, approximately 5 minutes away
    • Features: Offers 12 miles of trails, a lake, a beach, and picnic spots.
  4. Cranesville Swamp Preserve
    • Distance: 6 miles, approximately 10 minutes away
    • Features: A unique boreal swamp with trails.

 

NOTE: The previously scheduled paving project at Swallow Falls State Park has been rescheduled to 2025. From April 1, 2025, through October 30, 2025, contractors will be paving and replacing culverts throughout the park. During this time, the campground and the shelter will be closed. Reservations will not be accepted until a more detailed construction timeline is available. Guests are encouraged to check the Maryland Park Reservations website for updates or contact the park office at (301) 334-9180.
