The Garrett County Steps to Better Health Committee provided scholarships to two Garrett County high school graduating seniors who are pursuing careers in a healthcare field. Each recipient was given $500 scholarships.
The Northern High School recipient of the Steps to Better Health Scholarship is Ethan Sebold. Ethan career plan is to attend Frostburg State University to become a Nurse Practitioner.
“Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world,” said Ethan, quoting Nelson Mandela. “And I would like to be part of that change. When confronted with another’s suffering, I want to be able to help find a solution to relieve their suffering.”
The Southern High School recipient of the Steps to Better Health Scholarship is Kayla Massey. Kayla will be attending West Virginia University to obtain a degree in neuroscience, on her way toward medical school.
“Basically, my ultimate goal is to become a neurologist,” Kayla said. “I intend to enter medical school and eventually become a doctor of philosophy in a neuroscience program.” Her key motivation to enter this medical field was a series of health diagnoses received by her family.
In addition to studying in a healthcare field, the following are requirements to apply for a Steps Scholarship:
- Cumulative GPA of 2.5 or higher
- Demonstrate character and leadership
- Demonstrate involvement in extra-curricular and/or community activities
The Steps Committee is composed of local businesses, public agencies, and private citizens, striving to improve the overall wellness in our community. The committee is the organizing body for the Garrett County Health Fair scheduled each April.
