State testing results have been released from the Maryland State Department of Education (MSDE). Maryland Comprehensive Assessment Program (MCAP) results for ELA, Math, and Science show Maryland College and Career Ready Standards (MCCRS). Overall, test scores show much recovery has been made since emerging from the pandemic.
English Language Arts (ELA) results show that 49% of Garrett County Public Schools (GCPS) Students are proficient in grades 3-8 for the 2022-23 school year. That compares to a statewide average of 47% proficiency. The state low was 25% and a high of 68% across the state. Twenty-three of twenty-four Local Education Agencies (LEAs) improved from the prior school year. English 10 assessments for GCPS were 64%, compared to the statewide average of 54% proficiency. The trend in ELA shows that Maryland students have returned to pre-pandemic performance levels.

Every LEA improved over the prior year. Algebra I assessments proved 27% proficiency for GCPS, again outpacing the state average of 17%, and ranking GCPS as the fourth-best in proficiency in the state. State averages ranged from 6% on the low side to 38% on the high side. Mathematics assessment results improved in several grades, but students have not returned to pre-pandemic levels.
Science assessment results for grade 5 show that 41% of GCPS Students are proficient, compared to the statewide average of 34.5%. LEAs range from a low of 11.7% to a high of 54.1%. Twenty-three LEAs experienced a decrease when comparing results to the 2021-22 school year. Maryland grade 5 students have exceeded pre-pandemic performance in science, while grade 8 has not yet returned to pre-pandemic proficiency levels.
