Anyone who drives, walks or bikes along I-68 through Cumberland can give feedback on a state study of the Cumberland Viaduct at a public open house on Tuesday, Oct. 27, according to an SHA news release.
The Maryland Department of Transportation State Highway Administration will hold the open house from 5 to 7 p.m. at the Allegany Museum, 3 Pershing St., Cumberland. Visitors can drop in any time to view maps and displays, talk with SHA representatives and give feedback. There will be no formal presentation.
The Planning and Environmental Linkages study covers I-68 (National Freeway) from US 220 (McMullen Highway) to MD 639 (Willowbrook Road) in Allegany County. It is looking at ways to improve safety, access and connectivity for motorists, pedestrians and bicyclists. Work on the study began in winter 2025, and SHA expects to finish it in fall 2027.
Study materials will be posted on the I-68 Cumberland Viaduct PEL Study Portal after the open house. Anyone who needs an interpreter or other assistance can email shatitlevi@mdot.maryland.gov before the event, with the language needed in the subject line. Questions about the study can go to project manager Mulowa K. Kajoba at mkajoba@mdot.maryland.gov.
