The Ruth Enlow Library is inviting new communities to enjoy the fun and challenging game of American Mah Jongg. With the success of the weekly Mah Jongg sessions in Grantsville, the Library is expanding this opportunity to the Friendsville and Kitzmiller communities.
An introduction to American Mah Jongg will be offered at the Friendsville Library (currently housed in the Friendsville Town Park Community Building/Senior Center) from 10:00 AM to 3:00 PM on Tuesday, August 19. Join us for a fun day to learn the basics of the tile game. To sign up, call the Friendsville Library staff at (301) 746-5663 or send your reservation to melissa@relib.net. Please bring a sack lunch. Drinks will be provided. Invite your friends to join us.
The workshop will also be offered at the Kitzmiller Library on Thursday, September 11, from 10:00 AM – 3:00 PM. To sign up, call the Library at (301) 334-8091 or send your reservation to diane@relib.net. Lunch will be available.
The class includes an introduction to the tile set of “Suits”, Winds, Dragons, and Lucky Jokers. The game consists of players competing to form distinct sets or hands of these tiles. These elements are formed by the player’s choice among many arrangements, as described by the annual published “card of hands” developed by the National Mah Jongg League. www.nationalmahjonggleague.org
Brought to the US in the 1920s from China, an American version was developed and now widely played by groups of players who enjoy meeting new people, socializing, and the challenge of the game. If you are an experienced player, you may also enjoy the Thursday League, whose players meet at 1:00 p.m. at the Grantsville Library.
