Route 40 and Swan Meadow School Closure Advisory Presentations and Public Hearings Scheduled

Garrett County Public Schools (GCPS) has set dates for the Route 40 and Swan Meadow school closure advisory presentations and public hearings. The Route 40 Elementary School Closure Advisory Committee will present to the Superintendent of Schools and the Board of Education, then make its recommendation on the future status of the school. This will take place on Wednesday, March 8, 2023, beginning at 6:00 p.m., in the school cafeteria. The public will then have the opportunity to share their views orally, or ahead of time in writing, to the Superintendent.

Similarly, the Swan Meadow School Closure Advisory Committee will present to the Superintendent of Schools and the Board of Education, then make its recommendation on the future status of the school. This will take place on Thursday, March 9, 2023, beginning at 6:00 p.m., at the Pleasant Valley Community Center. The public will then have the opportunity to share their views orally, or ahead of time in writing, to the Superintendent and the Board. Please note, this meeting has changed from the originally announced date.

For both meetings, public comment is expected to follow the protocol set forth for Board meetings. Topics excluded from Public Comment include:

  • Individual personnel issues
  • Comments identifying individual students or staff members
  • Matters that are on appeal or may be appealed
  • Topics for which the Board schedules formal public hearings
  • Advertising or solicitation for products and/or services

Written comments must be received by 4:00 p.m. on Friday, March 3, 2023, and may be mailed to the Central Office Attn: Public Relations Office at the address above or emailed to public.info@gcps.netWhile written comments will not be read aloud during the meeting, they will be reviewed by the Superintendent and the Board of Education. Speakers at the meeting will be limited to three (3) minutes each and the guidelines for public comment must be followed. The Superintendent is expected to make her recommendation to the Board of Education during the March 14, 2023, monthly Board meeting.
