Reading Buddies Returns to HART with the Help of Enzo’s Library

Reading Buddies at Deep Creek Lake, MD

“Reading Buddies,” a program that provides socialization for pets and cultivates a love for reading for kids of all ages, has returned to the Adoption Wing at the HART Center. Each Thursday from 3:00 – 5:00 pm, children can choose a book from “Enzo’s Library” and read to the cats and dogs. The books may then be taken home, courtesy of the Bavis Foundation. The Foundation also supplies bookmarks and dog treats.

“Enzo’s Library” was created and named after the Bavis family cat, adopted at HART in 2019. “The Bavis Foundation is proud to be the primary sponsor of HART’s Reading Buddies program,” says President and Director, Karen Bavis. “The animals benefit from increased socialization and a reduction in stress which can help them become more adoptable and increase their chances of finding their forever homes. And who wouldn’t want to spend an afternoon with a great book and lots of purrs and tail wags!”

Reading to adoptable animals is a heartwarming and rewarding experience that brings joy and comfort to both the children and the animals. Children can practice their reading skills in a non-judgmental environment as well as develop empathy and compassion for animals.
