Garrett County Public Schools (GCPS) has been made aware of reports of scam callers posing as representatives of GCPS. These callers may use spoofed phone numbers that appear legitimate and may request personal or other sensitive information.
We encourage all stakeholders to remain vigilant. If you receive a suspicious call, do not share personal information until you have independently verified the caller’s identity. Caller ID alone should not be relied upon to confirm that a call is legitimate.
Helpful Tips to Protect Yourself from Scam Calls
- Verify the caller. Caller ID can be spoofed to make a call appear to come from a legitimate GCPS phone number.
- Protect your information. Do not share personal, financial, or student information with an unverified caller.
- When in doubt, hang up. Contact the school or department directly using an official phone number listed on the GCPS website.
- Report suspicious calls. Notify GCPS or the Garrett County Sheriff’s Office (GCSO) if you receive a suspicious call from someone claiming to represent the school system: Mr. Mike Bittinger, GCPS Manager of Safety & Security, at 301-334-7986, or the GCSO at 301-334-1911.
GCPS will not request personal information over the phone. Thank you for helping us protect our students, families, staff, and community. Please share this notice to help raise awareness.
