Prescribed Burns: A Powerful Tool for Healthy Ecosystems

At the MD 4-H Environmental Education & Camping Center, our controlled burn field is another educational feature completed in partnership with the local Department of Natural Resources. The controlled burn happened on April 7th.

Controlled burns, also known as prescribed burns, are an essential tool for maintaining healthy ecosystems. These intentional burns target well-defined areas and offer numerous environmental benefits. These burns reduce invasive plants, improve soil health, and encourage native vegetation growth. They also improve habitat and food sources for pollinators, animals, and ground-nesting birds.
