The Frostburg Outdoor Recreation Economy Institute (FOREI), Sarah Myers Marketing, and the Garrett College Outdoor Leadership & Adventure Education (OLA) program hosted a free Outdoor Entrepreneurship Workshop on Friday, November 14 at the CAOS Building in McHenry, drawing a diverse group of current and aspiring business owners from across the region.
The interactive, four-hour session provided hands-on tools and frameworks to help participants launch, grow, or diversify their outdoor-based ventures. Topics included entrepreneurial mindset, business modeling, marketing foundations, and the importance of service and community connection in building a sustainable brand.
Jodi Broadwater, from the Maryland Small Business Development Center, shared state and local resources for entrepreneurs, emphasizing the free advising and planning tools available to support small business growth.
“Western Maryland’s outdoor economy continues to thrive because of the creativity and collaboration of people who care deeply about this place,” said Sarah Myers, workshop facilitator. “Participants left with a clearer understanding of how to connect their ideas, skills, and passion to real business opportunities and how to grow them with purpose.”
Attendees represented a variety of interests, including guiding services, event planning, and large non-profit tourism partnerships. Many expressed appreciation for the workshop’s balance of practical strategy and peer collaboration.
FOREI Director Jeff Simcoe noted that this program reflects the institute’s mission to strengthen the outdoor recreation economy through entrepreneurship, workforce development, and community engagement.
