The Town of Oakland is set to receive $1,092,000 in federal funding to overhaul its aging water system, one of three Garrett County projects included on U.S. Sen. Chris Van Hollen’s list of FY26 Congressionally Directed Spending projects secured for Maryland.
According to the project listing, the money will be used to replace Oakland’s antiquated water system infrastructure. The work is described as necessary “to correct critical distribution failures, including low pressure and volume issues, and ensure compliance with the International Fire Code.”
The applicant is the Town of Oakland, and the project location is listed as Garrett County. Congresswoman April McClain Delaney and Senator Angela Alsobrooks co-sponsored the project.
Two additional Garrett County requests also appear among the secured FY26 projects:
- Garrett County Sanitary District, Inc. — Gorman Water Source Project, $1,659,000. Funds will be used to provide water source redundancy by drilling a new production well to replace the previous production well that collapsed.
- Garrett Regional Medical Center — Radiology Department Planning and Design, $1,000,000. Funds will be used for a comprehensive radiation department and on-site radiation treatment services for cancer patients in Garrett County and surrounding communities, which currently lack convenient access to this care.
Together, the three projects account for roughly $3.75 million in federal funding directed to Garrett County.
Congressionally Directed Spending allows members of the U.S. Senate to request funding for specific local projects in their state as part of the annual appropriations process. Requests are submitted by state and local governments and nonprofit organizations, then reviewed and included in appropriations legislation.
