The Town of Oakland has opened applications for a new grant program aimed at sprucing up its downtown and commercial corridors. The FY 2027 Commercial Facade Improvement Grant is a locally funded initiative designed to encourage property owners and business operators to invest in the exterior appearance of their buildings.
The idea behind the program is straightforward: better-looking storefronts and commercial buildings tend to draw more foot traffic and reflect well on the town as a whole, so Oakland is offering financial support to help offset the cost of exterior upgrades. Because the grant is competitive, not every applicant is guaranteed funding. Town officials say projects will be evaluated on factors including overall quality, the anticipated impact on the surrounding community, how ready the project is to move forward, and whether it meets the program’s guidelines.
Business owners and property owners interested in applying have a tight window to act, with the application deadline set for August 15, 2026. Given the short turnaround, town officials are encouraging anyone considering an application to reach out promptly for details on eligibility and the required paperwork.
The facade grant program adds to a broader set of tools Oakland and Garrett County have rolled out this year to support local businesses, including workforce training programs, loan funds, and coaching services aimed at helping companies grow.
