Northern Garrett JROTC Cadets Clean and Paint Memorial

Northern Garrett JROTC Cadets Clean and Paint Memorial at Deep Creek Lake, MD

Northern Garrett High School’s JROTC Cadets cleaned up and painted the B-52 Crash Memorial in preparation for Memorial Day remembrance. This monument, in Grantsville, MD, serves as a tribute to the selfless citizens of this area who braved sub-zero temperatures and deep snow for over five days to aid air and ground rescue teams in the recovery of victims from a United States B-52 bomber crash on January 13, 1964.

We commemorate Major Robert L. Payne, Major Robert E. Townley, and S/Sgt. Melvin Wooten, as well as Major Thomas W. McCormick and Captain Parker C. Peedin, who survived the incident. Erected in 1964 by the Mountain District of the American Legion, Department of Maryland, this monument acknowledges the brave men of the United States Air Force who protect the security and freedom of our nation and its citizens. Their example inspires us to lend a helping hand whenever possible.

Thank you to the Northern Garrett High JROTC cadets for their community service and example to others!
