In response to a procedural error regarding the regulations outlined in COMAR 13A.02.09.01, coupled with continued uncertainty surrounding both Federal and State funding sources, Dr. Brenda McCartney, Superintendent of Schools for Garrett County Public Schools (GCPS), in consultation with Mr. Tom Woods, President of the Garrett County Board of Education (GCBOE), has made the difficult decision not to move forward with the Northern Area Proposal.
As a result, the recommendation originally slated for the March 11th, 2025 Garrett County Board of Education meeting regarding the proposed relocation of Accident Elementary School and the transition of eighth-grade students to Northern Garrett High School will not be presented. The planned changes will no longer proceed at this time.
“This decision is not made lightly,” said Dr. McCartney. “I would like to extend my heartfelt thanks to the dedicated staff, the Northern Area Advisory Committee, and all the community members who have actively participated in reviewing and providing input on this proposal. We are committed to ensuring that we operate all of our facilities efficiently to best support our students and communities as we move forward.”
Garrett County Public Schools remains focused on providing quality education and services while being mindful of both current circumstances and long-term sustainability. The district will continue to engage with stakeholders and explore solutions that support the well-being and success of all students.
