The National Organizations of State Offices of Rural Health have designated Thursday, November 20, 2025, as National Rural Health Day to bring attention to and honor the incredible efforts of rural healthcare providers, communities, organizations, State Offices of Rural Health, and other stakeholders dedicated to addressing the unique healthcare needs of rural America.
To honor National Rural Health Day on November 19, 2025, the Rural Maryland Council will host a Health-Focused Bus Tour showcasing innovative approaches to improving health and wellness in rural communities. Participants will visit Choptank Community Health System’s new Federalsburg Health Center, For All Seasons in Easton, and the University of Maryland’s new Easton Hospital building site. These site visits highlight the critical role that accessible, community-based health care and behavioral health services play in supporting rural Marylanders. This tour will offer valuable insight into successful collaborations, infrastructure investments, and innovative models advancing rural health across the state.
On November 20, 2025, we will gather for the 2025 Rural Summit entitled “Elevating Maryland through Stronger Rural Communities,” which includes discussions on improving health care access in rural areas. Maryland Department of Health Secretary Dr. Meena Seshamani will give opening remarks. The event will feature panel discussions on healthcare workforce efforts, the state’s new AHEAD model, and how Maryland is making prescription drugs more affordable. It is crucial for state, local, and federal elected officials and policymakers to recognize the importance of supporting and funding programs that address the health care needs of rural communities. As we meet on November 20th, we will consider policy recommendations for the Moore Administration and the Maryland General Assembly.
On this National Rural Health Day, we must remember the significance of health care and wellness in quality of life. From McHenry to Tyaskin and Rising Sun to Najemoy, the sense of community felt throughout our rural counties demonstrates the “Power of Rural.” This state’s rural towns and regions are prime examples of how partnerships and resourcefulness can be used as tools in improving the health of rural populations.
