During the July 2026 Board meeting, Mr. James Friend was approved as the next Supervisor of Instruction – Elementary beginning with the 2026-27 school year. In this role, Mr. Friend will provide leadership in the planning, implementation, and evaluation of all elementary instructional programs, while promoting high-quality education for students. He replaces Mrs. Candy Maust, who moved into the Director of Elementary Education position.
Mr. Friend is a lifelong resident of Garrett County and has spent his entire career with Garrett County Public Schools. He taught elementary school in Friendsville, Grantsville, and Route 40 Elementary Schools before becoming a principal at Friendsville Elementary School. Mr. Friend has served the Friendsville community for the past 8 years, where he has worked diligently to implement many programs and initiatives that engage students in learning.
“Throughout his career, Mr. Friend has demonstrated a passion for creating meaningful learning opportunities for students and supporting educators,” said Dr. Nicole Miller, Superintendent. “His leadership at Friendsville Elementary has helped foster a culture of engagement, achievement, and growth. We are confident that his experience and dedication will continue to benefit students and staff throughout Garrett County Public Schools in his new role.”
Mr. Friend began serving in his new role this past week.
