Monday August 3

Another great weekend at the lake folks.  Saturday had some late rain, but the rest of the weekend was wonderful  Today’s weather looks like it may be of the “wet” variety. There’s a  chance of showers and thunderstorms, then showers and possibly a thunderstorm after 1:00 pm with a high near 75 degrees. In the evening, showers and possibly a thunderstorm before 2:00 am, then showers likely with a low around 63.

Happy first Monday of August!  I have posted the August Cover Story here, and it provides an update on the state of the county relative to my take on the impact of the pandemic on  the economy and businesses. I spoke to both Railey and Taylor Made for this cover story and provide some additional insight from both of those important to-the-community organizations.

With the current pandemic, many local charities have had their fundraising plans change.  I know Sarah reported on this, but I wanted to also cover the replacement “event” for Art & Wine.  You can click here to find out more about their innovative approach!

Congratulations to Steve Green of High Mountain Sports who was named the 2020 Heise Award Winner!  Congratulations to Steve and very well deserved. Steve is a true entrepreneur.

Hearty congratulations also go out to Brenda McDonnell of Brenda’s Pizzeria, who was named to Maryland’s Top 100 Women and Dr. Dana McCauley of Crellin Road Elementary School, who was also named.  Both are VERY deserving of this honor and we salute them here!

Since we are recognizing those in the community, we would be remiss if we did not give a shout-out to Connor Norman, who was named Friday as Diplomat of the Year by the Garrett County Chamber.  Connor is a hard-working, smart, great fellow that I had the pleasure of teaching at Garret College.

Here’s a link to Issue 12 of the Maryland Board of Education COVID Response & Continuity of Learning Success newsletter.  There’s some good information and updates here for all you parents and grandparents.

Fellow Deep Creek Lake Lion Barry Krewson and his wife Mary Ann are co-directors of golf operations at Alpine Lake Resort, just south of Oakland. Barry said if any readers mention Deep Creek Times when they play they will give give them a free soft drink and snack to complement their already very low prices for 18 holes.  You have to play on a Sunday through Thursday this week to get the deal. The cost for 18 holes is only $33 for those under 55 and is even lower, $25, for those of us better than 55!

Don’t forget to nominate your favorite buisness, service, professional or place in this year’s Deep Creek Times People’s Choice Competition.  Here’s the link.  We plan on doing things a little different this year so be sure to get your nominations in before they close and follow the progress.

That’s it for today.  Have a great Monday folks…
