Maryland DNR Announces Savage Highlands State Park

The Maryland Department of Natural Resources (DNR) announced the creation of Savage Highlands State Park, a 40-acre property bordered on all sides by more than 700 acres of the Savage River State Forest’s Mt. Aetna Tract. Acquired by DNR in November 2024, the former Savage River Lodge property will be managed by the Maryland Park Service as part of the New Germany State Park Complex.

The park is not yet open for general public use while facilities are renovated and a management plan is developed. There is a nature hike planned for September 28. Park officials emphasized that phased public access is a priority, with a goal of welcoming both day-use and overnight guests and with concessions once initial improvements are complete.

Future overnight accommodations will include cabins and yurts. Management is evaluating options to increase sleeping capacity in select units and to add features that make it easier for guests to store and prepare food. Reservations are not being accepted at this time. Day-use amenities planned for opening phases include parking, restrooms, picnic areas, and on-site information boards. The Highlands Lodge will serve as a central hub where visitors can gather, relax, and connect.

The lodge is also being considered for small private events such as meetings, retreats, celebrations, and intimate weddings; event reservations are not yet available.

Savage Highlands will be pet-friendly. Leashed pets will be welcome in outdoor common areas throughout the park and on designated trails within Savage River State Forest; a selection of cabins will allow pets.

Hunting is prohibited within Savage Highlands State Park. The surrounding Savage River State Forest remains a designated hunting area; boundary and safety-zone signs clearly mark where hunting is permitted. Anglers have nearby options along the Savage River within the state forest, with parking available at the lot next to the Mt. Aetna Road bridge. A Maryland non-tidal fishing license is required for anglers ages 16 and older, and a trout stamp is required when targeting trout. There are no designated swimming areas at Savage Highlands; visitors may wade in Mudlick Run or the Savage River within the state forest at their own risk.

Opening timelines, reservation details, and event information will be announced as plans are finalized.
