Man Faces Felony Arson Charges Following State Fire Marshal Investigation into Oakland Fire

A man is facing felony charges following a July fire investigation by the Office of the Maryland State Fire Marshal.

The accused is identified as Chad Edward Care, 43, of Hedgesville, West Virginia. Care is facing first- and second-degree arson charges and two counts of first-degree malicious burning. All are felonies.

Deputy State Fire Marshals assigned to the Western Region Office served a criminal summons on Care this morning at Deep Creek Lake in Garrett County.

On July 30, 2026, at approximately 4:50 p.m., Deputy State Fire Marshals and accelerant-detection K-9 Quinn responded to investigate a fire reported near the 0 block of Dobbin Road in Oakland, Maryland.

Investigators determined the fire was set intentionally by one of the property owners following a family dispute. A greenhouse and two camper trailers were destroyed in the fire, with an estimated loss of $40,000.

The Gorman Fire Department responded to extinguish the flames. Garrett County, Maryland Sheriff’s Office assisted with the investigation. No injuries were reported.
