Hundreds of dogs in as many as 16 states have contracted a mysterious respiratory illness that has spread across the U.S. since August. Here are some important tips for keeping your pets safe from sickness:
- If your dog’s health is compromised, consider avoiding kennels or dog parks.
- Make sure to know the health status of the dogs you choose to interact with.
- Avoid sharing water bowls and close contact in heavily trafficked areas where dogs may be exposed to droplets and bacteria.
- Ensure that your dogs are up to date on their vaccines.
- Look out for symptoms such as coughing, eye and nasal discharge, and lethargy.
- When traveling, confirm that your daycare or sitter is open and inquire about their holiday protocols for sanitation or potential closures to ensure your pooch stays safe.
