A new sweet spot in Oakland officially celebrated its arrival Tuesday as Hey Sugar by Mullenax Bakery held a ribbon-cutting ceremony at its new storefront in Oakland.
Garrett County Business Development hosted the ceremony, bringing together the Mullenax family, community members, local business representatives, and supporters to celebrate the opening and recognize the growth of a local small business. Local officials and community leaders in attendance included County Commissioner Paul Edwards, County Administrator Kevin Null, Oakland Mayor Andrew Sauder, Business Development Manager Kim Durst, Business Development Specialist Connor Norman, Chamber President Nick Sharps, and Greater Oakland Business Association President Kate Buchanan and Board member Sabrina Liggett;.
Hey Sugar is a new concept from Mullenax Bakery, offering a combination of the bakery’s signature treats and a colorful, fun sweet-shop experience. The storefront features custom cupcakes, cakes, and cookies, a rotating selection of sweet treats, candy, specialty drinks including dirty sodas and flavored lemonades, and gift merchandise.
For owner Marissa Mullenax, the new storefront represents the growth of a business that began as a home bakery. In announcing the ribbon cutting, Mullenax described the occasion as a major milestone, noting that the journey from a home-based operation to a storefront was made possible through the support of family, friends, customers, and the community.
“Hey Sugar is a great addition to Oakland and gives residents and visitors another place to gather, shop, and enjoy something special,” said Garrett County Commissioner Paul Edwards. “It’s encouraging to see new businesses bringing energy and activity to our communities, and we’re excited to see what the future holds for Marissa and her business.”
