Approximately thirty Garrett County Public Schools (GCPS) high school students enrolled in Advanced Placement (AP) environmental science during the 2023/24 school year completed an AP boot camp at the Hickory Environmental Education Center (HEEC) earlier this month to help them prepare for the course. During the two-day event, students met their instructor and classmates, reviewed course requirements and curriculum, and completed field activities that complement topics covered in the course.
Field activities included an ecological scavenger hunt, a stream health assessment of Cove Run, and a guided tour of a bog ecosystem. The boot camp concluded with recreation time at the Western Maryland 4-H Center Lake and ropes course. Northern Garrett High School AP environmental science instructor Carrie Glass was the lead teacher for the boot camp, with other GCPS staff assisting.
The AP Program is run by the College Board. It gives students the opportunity to experience college-level work while they are still in high school and can help students earn college credit and placement.
