GCPS Student Named Winner for Artwork in First Lady’s Fall Gallery Exhibition

Ms. Kamdyn Newsome, an eighth-grade student at Southern Garrett Middle school upon submission, currently a freshman at Southern Garrett High School, was named the overall winner of the middle school category in First Lady Yumi Hogan’s Fall 2022 Gallery Exhibit.  Ms. Newsome received this award for her piece titled “Zipper Face” which was submitted by her teacher at Southern Middle, Mrs. Alyssa Rodeheaver.

For her piece, Ms. Newsome used media consisting of charcoal.  Her work, along with all other selections, will be on virtual display.  The show was curated by Austin Ubannwa, may be viewed at https://tinyurl.com/mwfhw4nc, and will be online for six months.

“GCPS is very proud of Kamdyn’s accomplishments,” said Mrs. Dawna Ashby, Director of Fine Arts.  “The hard work and creativity that she put into this piece show her passion for art.  We strive to foster individuality in all our students, and she is an exceptional example of the young talent that we have in Garrett County.”

This is a bi-annual exhibition of artwork by Maryland students.  The exhibition was adjudicated, and three awards were given for outstanding accomplishments in visual arts.  Ms. Newsome’s selection is one of only forty-eight selections from across the state.  There was a virtual reception for all exhibitors held on Monday, October 3, 2022.
