GCPS Celebrates School Lunch Hero Day

Garrett County Public Schools (GCPS) is excited to celebrate the 10th annual School Lunch Hero Day, Friday, May 6, 2022. This day, we recognize the difference that our Food & Nutrition professionals make for every student that comes through the cafeteria. Each day our professionals prepare healthy meals for GCPS students, adhering to strict nutrition standards, accommodating student food allergies, and offering service with a smile. All of this makes each of our professionals true Lunch Heroes.

“It has been noted that ‘not all superheroes wear a cape…some were aprons.’ I am lucky enough to work with such superheroes and the best folks possible in the schools across Garrett County,” said Food & Nutrition Services Supervisor Scott Germain. “Please help me in thanking them on this day – and every day – for the work they do.”

While the past two years have proven challenging in many aspects of education, it has been particularly difficult in foodservice. Our school personnel dealt with changes in the distribution of meals to students, shortages that have affected the entire industry causing many substitutions and out-of-stock issues, as well as the addition of providing free snacks and meals for all individuals 18 and under. However, as we continue to transition back to normalcy, these programs are still in place requiring additional demand on the department, thus earning the title of School Lunch Hero.
