Hickory Environmental Education Center (HEEC) recently hosted Transition to Middle School summer camps for GCPS students entering the sixth grade in the upcoming school year. Approximately 100 students advancing to either Northern Garrett Middle School or Southern Garrett Middle School attended one of three 2-day, 1-night camps held between June 19 and 28 at HEEC. Students participated in various outdoor activities during their stay, including nature crafts, archery, hiking, and recreation time. They also participated in hands-on science activities, such as dissecting owl pellets, building rockets, and designing and testing water filters. Students also visited New Germany State Park to canoe, kayak, swim, and hike with park rangers. While participating in these engaging activities, students were introduced to peers from other elementary schools with whom they will attend middle school.
The Transition to Middle School camps are open to all GCPS students upon completion of fifth grade. Students are accepted to camp in the order that applications are received until all slots are filled.
