Garrett County Public Schools (GCPS) students demonstrated strong academic growth across several state assessments during the 2025-26 school year, according to results presented to the Garrett County Board of Education (GCBOE) during the August 11th Board Meeting.
GCPS recorded the greatest growth in English Language Arts (ELA) proficiency statewide, increasing by 2.8 percentage points and ranking 12th among Maryland counties. In mathematics, GCPS ranked 8th statewide and posted the second-highest growth in the state, increasing by 2.6 percentage points.
Science results also showed progress, with the largest gain occurring on the Grade 5 assessment, which increased by 5.7 percentage points.
Advanced Placement results showed continued growth as well. GCPS had six AP exams with a 100% success rate, added three new AP exams, including Research, and saw increased participation with an impressive 80% proficiency rate, an increase of 6.3% from last year.
“These results reflect the hard work of our students, teachers, school leaders, and families,” said Superintendent Dr. Nicole Miller. “We are encouraged by this growth and remain committed to providing every student with the instruction, support, and opportunities they need to succeed.”
As GCPS moves into the 2026–2027 school year, we will build on this progress with a clear focus on purposeful instruction, strong relationships, and meaningful learning opportunities. We will align instruction to the new state standards, leverage the high-quality instructional materials we have adopted, and strengthen instructional practices that engage and challenge every learner. Together, we will build on what is working, continue to grow, and create the conditions for every student to learn, thrive, and be prepared for what comes next.
