Garrett County Community Action and the Garrett County Democratic Club Announce New Winter 2022 Drivers Ed Scholarships for County Students

Garrett County New Drivers: Let’s Drive! Scholarships will again be offered to Northern and Southern High School, and Home Schooled students this month. The scholarships provide students with a Driver’s Education course to learn how to drive. While Drivers Education is no longer provided by Maryland Public Schools, completing a Drivers Ed course is required in order to qualify for a Maryland Drivers license. Preference will be given to students with financial needs, and courses will be offered in person or online.

Leah Knicely, Communications Director of Garrett County Community Action, Inc., said, “Working in our community, we’re glad to support young people on the path to learn to drive. Particularly in a rural county such as ours, a driver’s license helps provide young people with greater opportunities up for mobility, jobs, education, and transportation independence.”

The Let’s Drive scholarship program is generously supported by local business sponsors: Gold level sponsor – the First United Community Dreams Foundation, and Bronze level sponsor Glotfelty Enterprises and WEPCO Federal Credit Union, as well as many individual donors.

“We’re thrilled with the community support that this program has received. We’re particularly grateful for the support of Garrett County Business sponsors – – their support will mean that many County students will be able to learn to drive and learn to drive safely,” said Erin-Ruth Natividad, President of the Democratic Club.

This is the second year that the Democratic Club has offered Drivers Ed scholarships to County students. Last year, 11 students received Let’s Drive scholarships and completed their Drivers Ed training earlier this year. “We’ve seen firsthand how beneficial this scholarship program is to young people. And we’re excited to be working together with Community Action and our business sponsors to expand the program this year!” said Lori Richards, Scholarship Coordinator for the Club.
