The Garrett County Chamber of Commerce, in partnership with the Garrett County Department of Business Development, recently celebrated the 40th anniversary of Schoolhouse Earth with a milestone recognition ceremony honoring the business’s lasting contributions to Garrett County’s economy, tourism industry, and community.
Established in 1986 by Nancy Graham, Schoolhouse Earth has grown into one of Garrett County’s most beloved shopping destinations. For the past 22 years, owner Stephen Rodeheaver has proudly carried that legacy forward, welcoming residents and visitors alike with a distinctive shopping experience featuring specialty gifts, gourmet foods, home décor, seasonal merchandise, locally made products, and family-friendly attractions that have made the business a must-visit destination for generations.
The ceremony was led by Connor Norman, Business Development Specialist for the Garrett County Department of Business Development and Chair of the Garrett County Chamber Diplomats. Garrett County Commissioners Paul Edwards and Larry Tichnell presented Rodeheaver with a Garrett County citation recognizing Schoolhouse Earth’s 40 years of service. The Garrett County Chamber Diplomats also presented a Certificate of Recognition commemorating the milestone.
Local dignitaries in attendance included Commissioners Paul Edwards and Larry Tichnell, County Administrator Kevin Null, Kim Durst, Manager of Business Development for the Garrett County Department of Business Development, Christy Butler, Western/Mountain Maryland Public Engagement Officer for the Comptroller of Maryland, Garrett County Chamber Board Member David Jochynek, and Chamber President Nick Sharps.
Diplomats in attendance included Anne Davidson, Chris Rodeheaver, Kristin Skeweris, and Macey Wells.
“I’ve always said ribbon cuttings are my favorite Chamber events because they celebrate new beginnings,” said Nick Sharps, President of the Garrett County Chamber of Commerce. “But standing here today, recognizing a business that has been serving Garrett County for 40 years—longer than I’ve been alive—I think this may top it. Businesses like Schoolhouse Earth don’t just survive for four decades; they become part of our community’s identity. That’s something truly worth celebrating.”
