Garrett College Hosts Student Wellbeing Fair

Wellbeing isn’t always at the forefront of college students’ minds.

Garrett College hosted a Student Wellbeing Fair last Thursday in an attempt to change that situation.

“This is a phenomenal turnout, and we’re really excited to have so many community organizations involved,” said Shelley Menear, Garrett College’s director of compliance, who organized the Wellbeing Fair that attracted 91 students. “We wanted to put all of these resources kind of right in students’ faces. We’d like them to understand all of the support available to students.”

Garrett College freshman Savannah Davis, a recent graduate of Southern Garrett High, indicated the fair came at an opportune time.

“It’s been a little stressful,” Davis said of the start to the fall semester, “but the staff is really nice, and I feel like I’ll get through it.”

“It’s a great opportunity for everyone who wants to know about everything the College has to offer, as well as outside resources from around the county,” said Garrett College student Jacquelyn Patton, who is a Northern Garrett High graduate.

The Garrett County Health Department, Dove Center, Garrett Regional Medical Center, Mountain Laurel Medical Center, Maryland Wellness, AHEC West, Jazzercise, and the Garrett County Lighthouse/Archway Station were all participating agencies.

“It’s important that the students understand the availability of mental health resources,” said RN Amanda Shreve, who was representing Garrett Regional Medical Center. Shreve brought a number of giveaways with her, including heated eye pillows “to help students de-stress and relax after long days at school.”

Corey Edmonds, manager of business and community development at Mountain Laurel Medical Center, said he felt it was important for MLMC to be represented at the Wellbeing Fair.

“We’re the safety net provider for our community,” said Edmonds. “We felt it was our responsibility to be here so that people know about our services.”

Garrett College offices were also well represented at the fair. The Students in Need Group (SING), Academic and Advising Success Center (AASC), Library and Learning Commons, Edwards Community and Aquatic Recreation Complex (CARC), Office of Financial Aid, Campus Security, and Mental Health Counseling Office all had tables at the fair.

“The fair was a fun and interactive way to introduce students to community and campus resources to support their well-being while at Garrett College,” said Dr. Ashley Ruby, GC’s director of learning commons and academic success. “Each participant offered tips and tools to help students make healthy, positive choices. This, in turn, will uplift their overall success as college students.”
