HART for Animals is pleased to announce that internationally renowned veterinarian Dr. Sherman O. Canapp, Jr., DVM, MS, CCRT, will now perform arthroscopic surgeries at HART. Dr. Canapp is double board-certified by the American College of Veterinary Surgeons (SA) and the American College of Veterinary Sports Medicine & Rehabilitation, where he is the Past President of the College. With over 20 years of expertise in canine sports medicine, Dr. Canapp is known for pioneering minimally invasive techniques that provide definitive diagnoses and advanced treatment options for dogs with joint and soft tissue injuries.
Arthroscopic surgery is a state-of-the-art, minimally invasive procedure that utilizes a tiny scope – about the size of a needle – to diagnose and treat joint conditions through small incisions. This technique offers numerous benefits over traditional surgical methods, including reduced anesthesia time, less pain, a lower risk of infection, and a significantly faster recovery. The advanced imaging capabilities of arthroscopy provide a clear, magnified view inside the joint, allowing for more precise diagnosis and treatment of conditions such as elbow dysplasia, shoulder injuries (including biceps injuries, medial shoulder syndrome, and osteochondritis dissecans [OCD]), knee and ankle injuries, cartilage damage, and osteoarthritis.
Studies have shown that arthroscopy is significantly more sensitive and specific than MRI and CT scans for diagnosing joint conditions. This means veterinarians can identify the problem more accurately and treat it in the same procedure under a single anesthesia session.
