We’re thrilled to bring you some exciting updates regarding the health and management of the Deep Creek Lake Natural Resource Management Area! As the vibrant fall colors begin to adorn our beloved landscape, we also have some positive news about our ongoing management efforts.
Hydrilla Monitoring Success!
Our dedicated team has continued its vigilant monitoring for hydrilla—a pesky aquatic invasive species that can disrupt our beautiful lake ecosystem. We are happy to report that, after thorough inspections and follow-ups on reported sightings, no hydrilla has been found outside of the known treatment areas. This is a fantastic achievement and a testament to our community’s commitment to preserving the natural beauty of Deep Creek Lake!
Recently, a local contractor shared images on Facebook, describing a large bed of potentially invasive vegetation. We took this seriously and promptly investigated with our certified divers and aquatic vegetation experts. We’re pleased to confirm that what was identified as a potential hydrilla sighting is the presence of both species of native elodea found in Deep Creek Lake. Native plants play a vital role in maintaining a balanced ecosystem, and we are delighted to see them thriving!
Looking Ahead: Continued Management Efforts
While we celebrate these positive findings, our work is far from over. Treatment and management of known hydrilla locations will continue through 2025. In a promising development, we anticipate removing at least two sites from treatment, following their prescribed management plan. This reduction is a wonderful indicator that our strategies are effective! Moreover, we are pleased to inform you that Meadow Mountain Cove will be added as a new treatment site following confirmation of hydrilla presence this summer. This proactive approach will help us stay one step ahead in maintaining the health of our lake.
Exciting New “10 in 10” Program!
In addition to our successful hydrilla management efforts, we’re excited to introduce our new “10 in 10” program! This initiative offers free native trees, shrubs, and herbaceous plants to Deep Creek Lake’s adjacent property owners for planting in their area of use, helping to enhance the beauty of our landscape while reducing the effects of runoff and erosion on our shorelines! Properties with less than 10% existing vegetation will be given priority for this program, however, all tree fanatics are encouraged to inquire. Participants will receive not only native plants but also tree cages, soil amendments, and tailored planting recommendations. Our team will conduct site inspections and provide specific recommendations to ensure the best results for your property. If you’re interested in transforming your property and contributing to the overall health of our Buffer Strip, please contact the Lake Management Office by January 2025 to be considered for the spring 2025 planting season. Trees will be available for scheduled pickup or delivery between April and May 2025.
Goose Hunt Permits: Apply for the Lottery!
As we embrace the fall season, we also want to remind you about the upcoming goose hunting opportunities at Deep Creek Lake! For those interested in participating, permits are required to hunt in designated areas, and we will again be utilizing our lottery system for applicants. Applications for the hunting lottery are accepted from September 1st, 2024 to October 15th, 2024. All applicants will be entered into the lottery, and selected individuals will be notified shortly thereafter. This ensures a fair and equitable distribution of permits, so make sure to submit your application on time! Once you receive your permit, you’ll receive information on designated hunting locations and any specific regulations to follow. We encourage all interested hunters to apply early, as spots fill up quickly!
