A saying at Crellin Elementary School is, “Who needs TV when we have our own reality show?”. The latest episodes have focused on events happening on Sunshine Farm, Crellin’s school farm. On December 20, 2022, under the watchful eyes of staff, several students, and our learning partners from Quad K Farm, our sheep Rose Mary gave birth to three female lambs. The number of new arrivals was a shock to everyone. Students voted and named them Noel, Hope, and Joy. All three lambs are doing well and entertain us with their bouncy jumps and happy noises.
As if that excitement wasn’t enough, on January 11, 2023, staff members assisted another sheep, Rain, as she delivered her lambs. Imagine the surprise as not one, not two, but three lambs were born! “We are blessed with a second set of triplets, two females and one male,” said Dr. Dana McCauley, Principal. “We are voting on names today, and they will be announced soon. Students are busy helping with chores including cleaning stalls, watering and feeding the sheep, monitoring the health of the lambs, and, of course, cuddling and playing with their new friends.”
With anticipation, the school now awaits their sheep Sunny to give birth. The estimated arrival date is between January 22 and February 8, 2023. Several of the lambs will be given to Crellin 4-H students, who will show them at the Garrett County Agricultural Fair, and others will be adopted by friends at Accident Elementary School as they start their own agriculture program. Dr. McCauley added, “We want to thank everyone who supports our agriculture and environmental programs.”
