Clear Out the Medicine Cabinet: Medication Take Back Events Coming to Garrett County

What’s hiding in the back of your medicine cabinet?

An old prescription you no longer need? Medication that expired months ago? Something you’re not even sure why you still have?

Fall is a great time to take a few minutes to clean out those medications and get rid of them safely. The Garrett County Health Department, in partnership with the Maryland State Police, will host two local Medication Take Back events in October:

  • Tuesday, October 6, 2026 — Grantsville Dollar General, 12:00 PM – 2:00 PM
  • Tuesday, October 13, 2026 — New Beginnings Thrift Store in Bloomington, 12:00 PM – 2:00 PM

Residents can bring unwanted, unused, or expired medications to either event for safe disposal. It’s a simple step that can help keep medications from being accidentally taken, misused, or left in the home long after they are needed.

Think of it as a reset for your medicine cabinet. Take a few minutes to look through what you have, set aside medications you no longer need, and bring them to one of the October events.

Can’t make it to an event? Safe medication disposal is available year-round at permanent drop box locations at Oakland Town Police, the Garrett County Sheriff’s Office, and the Maryland State Police Barracks in McHenry.

Medication safety doesn’t have to be complicated. Sometimes, it starts with simply cleaning out a drawer.
