That distinct smell of fallen dried leaves, the feel of a cooler breeze, and the excitement in the air … Let’s celebrate and experience the beauty of fall and visit Garret County for the 55th Autumn Glory Festival!
The Autumn Glory is an annual festival held in Oakland, Maryland which dates back to 1967 and attracts around 60 thousand visitors every October. In the first years, the center of the festivities started with turkey growers promoting turkey dinners, and eventually, more activities have been added as each year passed.
What to expect this year?
A complete guide to all of the activities is published each year but, as a local, I have fond memories of the Autumn Glory Festival and I will highlight some of my favorite happenings!
From October 12 to 16, a string of fun-filled events and activities awaits locals and visitors of the Deep Creek Lake area. The event will kick off this year with a dinner hosted by the Garrett County Chamber of Commerce and, new this year, an Autumn Glory carnival!
Then, this Thursday is the family-fun Fireman’s Parade through downtown Oakland. Head to town early with a blanket and a chair to claim your view of the parade starting at 7pm. My favorite view is along Second Street near Englander’s Antiques and Grill.
Either Friday or Saturday is perfect for a treasure hunt at the 48th Annual Civic Club Antique and Makers Market. Vendors will be selling their wares and the Civic Club will have fresh soup and sandwiches and treats for good eats.
Also, on Saturday is the Grand Feature Parade! Showcasing regional bands, local professional and amateur floats, dance teams, and dignitaries, it’s a fan-favorite!
On Sunday, enjoy a leisurely hangout at the Deep Creek Farmer’s Market Pop-Up event. Live music and kids’ activities will make picking out fresh produce and handmade products in to a fun family adventure.
And to better appreciate the full glory of this season, Fall Foliage Driving Tours are available. The colors of the trees are absolute perfection this week! Make sure you get out to see it for yourself!
And finally, what’s an Autumn Glory Festival without a nod to the festival’s turkey grower origins? Once you’ve worked up an appetite, visit the Turkey Trail! Just follow the “Turkey Here” sign to see which local diners, grocers, and establishments will be serving a home-cooked turkey dinner. Don’t miss out.
Be sure to dress warmly as the weather continues to cool down and be prepared for occasional rain showers. No matter the weather, though, the Autumn Glory Festival is an amazing event!
