Maryland Public Television and the Maryland Genealogical Society offer another beginner-to-intermediate genealogy workshop series this fall. Finding Your Roots Online: The Where and When consists of four (4) two-hour sessions that take a deep dive into online records that locate ancestors in a time and place. We’ll look at how to find and get the most out of vital records (birth, marriage, and death), census records, church and cemetery records, directories, and local histories. In addition, we’ll explore how to find substitute records when vital and census records don’t exist. Finally, participants will learn to use these critical resources like an expert researcher. Each session features a combination of lecture, small and large group discussion, question and answer time, and a homework assignment relating to your family search. Handouts are provided for each session. The sessions will be recorded and registrants will have unlimited access to those recordings. While this workshop series extends what we learned in the spring, that course is not a prerequisite for participating. Food will be distributed beginning at 11:00 AM on a first-come, first-served basis and is limited to 100 boxes. To receive a box, participants will be asked to complete a screener. The Garrett County Board of Education will hold a Special Business Session on Thursday, September 26, 2024, to discuss the FY2024 Financial Statements and Single Audit Results. The meeting will be held at Dennett Road Educational Complex in the Community Room. The meeting is open to the public but will also be live-streamed for public review. The Special Business Session will begin at 4:00 PM. Public comment will be received at the beginning of the meeting prior to the audit presentations. The Board reserves the right to go into closed session if needed pursuant to the General Provision §3-305 of the State Government Article of the Annotated Code of Maryland.

The Garrett County Health Department has scheduled a tobacco treatment class to begin on September 5th. The class is one hour long, from 5:30 PM to 6:30 PM, and consists of four in-person group sessions, one each week, and two follow-up phone sessions for a total of six weeks. These sessions will help you learn how to change your habits. Participants receive many resources, including a class notebook, group support from others who are also trying to quit, and free cessation aids in the form of nicotine patches, gum, lozenge, or the prescription drugs Zyban or Chantix. “The class is free and designed to help you stop using all types of tobacco, including cigarettes, smokeless, and electronic smoking devices,” said Chelsie Dever, Director of Health Education & Outreach, adding “the support received from the other participants in the group who are also attempting to quit using tobacco really helps participants to stay focused on their goal.” To register for the class, go to www.KickingTobacco.com. In honor of National Public Lands Day, Garrett Trails will be teaming up with the Friends of New Germany State Park to host a trail work day on September 28. Volunteers are needed to shovel stone dust and help with other tasks. Please come prepared for physically demanding work and bring your own drinking water. The work day will conclude with food and drinks at noon, courtesy of the Friends of New Germany.
