DESCRIPTION:The Oakland Writers’ & Literature (OWL) Club is a group of 18 years and older writing enthusiasts\, tackling a common feeling among writers: the need for some encouragement to write. The focus of OWL is to provide a community for writers to share and workshop their own work\, and sometimes the work of published authors. The group uses tools of analysis to identify the literal meanings and themes of all genres of writing\, while also discussing the things that most stand out in the work. \nThe OWL club meets Wednesdays at 6:30 at the Main (Oakland) Library\, and is an open community where writers can pop in and pop out from week to week and always feel included and welcome when they return. \nWritings/readings are scheduled in advance of meetings using OWL’s community sign-up sheet. The OWL mailing list* is used for distributing this work. DESCRIPTION:Occurring on the 3rd Thursday of the month at the Kitzmiller branch\, representatives from the Garrett County Department of Social Services will be in the library to serve the community through their assistance outreach program. \nCustomers can come see a DSS staff person at any of these locations to pick up paperwork\, drop off paperwork\, apply for services like SNAP\, CASH Assistance\, and Medical Assistance\, or just to ask questions about the programs and services offered by our agency. Staff can also provide a referral to other community agencies if we do not have a program to address the person’s needs. ANYONE can access ANY of these locations. This schedule provides flexibility to our customers who may be working in communities away from their home or who may be facing transportation challenges. \nThese locations also provide support to our customers by making DSS forms available to customers during the location’s open hours of business. Customers can look for the file box labeled “DSS FORMS” to pick up forms\, information\, or a pre-paid envelope in which to return completed forms to our office for processing. \nPlease note: If Garrett County schools are canceled due to inclement weather\, the outreach activity is canceled for that day. SUMMARY:Oktoberfest at Grantsville Town Park
DESCRIPTION:Grab your stein\, put on your best German-inspired outfit\, and get ready for an afternoon of food\, fun\, music\, art and friendly competition when Oktoberfest returns to the Grantsville Arts & Entertainment District on Saturday\, September 19\, from 12 p.m. to 5 p.m. The celebration will take place at the Grantsville Town Park and is hosted this year by the Grantsville Lions Club and the Grantsville Arts & Entertainment District. \nDesigned as a festive community gathering for all ages\, Oktoberfest brings a taste of German tradition to the heart of Grantsville while highlighting local businesses\, breweries\, food vendors\, artists and artisans\, and community organizations. \nAt the center of the celebration will be the Oktoberfest Biergarten\, where guests 21 and older can enjoy a selection of local and traditional German beers. Local breweries Whitehorse\, Locust Post and Cushwa will be on hand\, while the Grantsville Lions Club will also offer German beer selections. For those who prefer wine\, German varieties including Riesling and Dornfelder will be available. \nOf course\, no Oktoberfest would be complete without plenty of delicious food. Deep Creek Pretzels will be serving up their popular soft pretzels\, perfect for pairing with a cold beer\, while Cafe Oasis will offer German-inspired food to round out the traditional Oktoberfest experience. \nThere will also be plenty happening for younger festival-goers. Children can try their hand at the event’s famous scarecrow-making station\, creating their own colorful fall character to take home. Apple bobbing will add another classic autumn activity to the day’s festivities. \nAdults can join in the fun with a lineup of traditional German games and competitions. Test your strength and technique with the keg toss\, try your hand at the hammer game\, or put your knowledge of all things German to the test during German trivia. The annual costume contest will give participants a chance to show off their most creative German or Oktoberfest-inspired attire. \nFor those looking for a true test of strength\, the stein hoist will challenge participants to see who can hold a full beer stein at arm’s length the longest.
