WUSA9 caught up with the National Police Bloodhound Association at their annual recertification training in Garrett County, Maryland. Retired California Sheriff’s Captain Coby Webb, who has over 20 years of experience handling bloodhounds, runs this training exercise. A few sniffs of a personal object and the bloodhound hones in on a scent trail.
Here’s an interesting to-do, especially if you have small children or are caring for someone with dementia: Webb designed the “Find’Em Scent Safe” and said it can double a bloodhound’s chances of finding someone.
Here’s how the method works:
- Place a gauze pad in an area where a person sweats, like their forehead or armpit.
- Keep it there for a few minutes to soak up the perspiration and trap scents.
- Place the gauze pad inside an adhesive-sealed plastic bag — a regular zip lock bag might not hold in that scent.
- Stick it in your home freezer.
