Tuesday September 7

I hope you each had a great holiday weekend — fall has unofficially started for me. I am sipping a pumpkin spice coffee this morning as I type.

Today is the first day of classes for Garrett County Public Schools. I am wishing all of the local students a great year!

Maryland Department of Natural Resources Secretary Jeannie Haddaway-Riccio announced $2.2 million in additional funding for Deep Creek Lake dredging. Speaking to a group at Garrett College, Secretary Riccio also discussed the state’s long-term commitment to water monitoring at the lake, ongoing efforts to prevent and combat aquatic invasive species, and work to protect and expand the lake’s freshwater fisheries.

The George Washington Whiskey Rebellion Fest, brought to you by the Community Trust Foundation, commemorates Washington’s last journey to Cumberland, when he arrived to put down the Whiskey Rebellion. This festival event happens this Friday, September 10, 2021 from 6 to 10 pm.

Southern Garrett High School is hoping to be able to build a Field House for the new athletic complex to provide team rooms, restrooms, a concession stand, a ticket booth, and necessary storage. The preliminary estimate for the installation of this Field House is $300,000 and they are collecting donations.

Vaccines are available in Oakland today. Appointments may be scheduled at the link or call 301-334-7698 for assistance. Appointments are preferred but walk-ins are welcome.

There’s a new umbrella art installation in downtown Oakland that represents “Weathering Life’s Storms” a community dance project by Brenda’s Body Shop. Purple umbrellas are on sale now to support Cindy’s Fund. Umbrellas are available at BBS, Green Acres, Gregg’s Pharmacy, and The Book Market.

 

Monday September 6

The weather today will be patchy fog before 11am. Otherwise, mostly sunny, with a high near 73 and a low around 52. Light west wind increasing to 5 to 10 mph in the morning. Winds could gust as high as 22 mph.

The Landfill is closed, today, Labor Day, Monday, September 6, 2021. The refuse collection sites are, however, open today 7:00am – 6:00pm.

The weather today will be sunny with a high near 70 and a low around 49. Calm wind becoming northwest around 5 mph in the afternoon. Saturday will be mostly sunny with a high near 73 and a low around 57. Calm wind becoming southwest around 6 mph in the afternoon. Sunday will be mostly cloudy with showers likely, mainly after 9am. A high near 68 and a low around 56. West wind 7 to 9 mph, with gusts as high as 18 mph. Chance of precipitation is 60%.

Labor Day Monday will be mostly sunny, with a high near 71 and a low around 52.

Thank you to Glenda at Garrett Regional Medical Center for sharing the most recent weather summary with us. The high-temperature average was 81.6 and the low-temperature average was 63.6, and there were 6.29 inches of precipitation reported for August. I’ll be interested to see how Ida’s rains compare!

No worries, though. Garrett County reported The Garrett County Emergency Operations Center was activated on September 1 at 0557 hrs and has returned to normal operations at 0800 yesterday, September 2. No water rescues or major damages were reported.

Wednesday September 1

The weather today will be showers and possibly a thunderstorm. Some of the storms could produce heavy rain. High near 67 and low around 49. East wind 8 to 13 mph becoming northeast in the afternoon. Winds could gust as high as 21 mph. Chance of precipitation is 100%. New rainfall amounts between 1 and 2 inches possible during the day and new precipitation amounts overnight between a tenth and quarter of an inch possible.

Maryland Emergency Management reports: As Tropical Depression Ida continues to make its way to our state, please continue to be aware of possible impacts to your area. River flooding, flash flooding, and tornadoes are the biggest threats to Maryland. The greatest risk of flooding is along and North of US-50, especially in Western Maryland, however, the risk exists across the entire state. Rainfall rates could reach 2-3″/hour during the heaviest part of the storm. The weather today will be showers and thunderstorms likely. Otherwise, cloudy, with a high near 72 and a low of 61. Light west wind. Chance of precipitation is 60%. New rainfall amounts between a quarter and half of an inch possible. Overnight, showers, and possibly a thunderstorm and some of the storms could produce heavy rain. New rainfall amounts between three quarters and one inch possible.

From the National Weather Service: The remnants of Ida and tropical moisture will interact with a stalled front Wednesday into early Thursday.

▪ Gale conditions possible Wednesday night

The greatest threat is the potential for considerable flooding/flash flooding of creeks and urban areas Wed/Wed night. Scattered thunderstorms could produce damaging wind gusts or a brief tornado. The storm could bring 4-8 inches of rain.

Today is Garrett County Overdose Awareness Day and the public is invited to participate in a local event from 7:00pm – 9:00pm at the Glades Park Pavilion. The event seeks to create better understanding of overdose, reduce the stigma of drug-related deaths, and create change that reduces the harms associated with drug use.

Garrett County Rabies Clinics have been scheduled for September. The first date is in Grantsville at Grantsville Elementary School​ on Monday, September 13, 2021, from 5:00pm to 6:00pm.

The American Red Cross is urging eligible donors to give blood this September to help tackle the needs of patients relying on lifesaving transfusions. In thanks for supporting patients in need of a transfusion, those who come to give blood or platelets around the Labor Day holiday, Sept. 3-7, will receive a new, 16-ounce Red Cross campfire mug, (while supplies last).

Broadford Recreational Park is a family-oriented park owned by the Town of Oakland. The park offers a lake, picnic and beach areas, volleyball, basketball, boat launch, boat, and pavilion rentals. Daily admission to Broadford Park is $4 per car Monday-Friday. It is $5 per car on Saturday & Sunday. Boat rentals are $5.00 per/hr. In partnership with the Maryland Department of Health and Johns Hopkins Center for Communication Programs, the Baltimore City Health Department is conducting this statewide survey to learn about what quality reproductive health care look like for folks who are connected to the state’s network of clinics and/or have never visited our clinics but may be interested in making an appointment. A great friend of mine, Pat O’Hammy, and I are recording a new video series as part of my “Explore More” campaign. These videos will be to showcase what the area has to offer and, pretty much, we will be taking you with us as we travel around the areas that we play in on a daily basis. Wednesday August 25

The Garrett County Public Schools board has voted 3 to 1 to universally mandate masks in school until there is “low” or “moderate”-level transmission rate (according to the CDC tracker) for two consecutive weeks. You can see the details of the live stream here (beginning at 3:26:50).

Garrett College’s new basketball coach, Matt McCullough, will be the youngest head men’s basketball coach in the Maryland Junior College Athletic Conference.

Each August, the staff of Garrett County WIC (Women, Infants and Children’s Special Supplemental Nutrition Program) join the rest of the nation in celebrating National Breastfeeding Month. This year’s theme is Protect Breastfeeding: A Shared Responsibility.

The Maryland Department of Natural Resources seeks members for its newly created Coldwater Fisheries Advisory Committee. Coldwater fisheries are an integral part of Maryland’s natural heritage and have always been one of the pillars driving the state’s conservation efforts. Thursday August 19

The weather today will be a slight chance of showers between 11am and 2pm, then a chance of showers and thunderstorms after 2pm. Mostly cloudy, with a high near 75 and a low around 63. West wind around 7 mph. Patchy fog overnight.

The scheduled herbicide treatment at Deep Creek Lake will be performed today, August 19. For full details regarding these efforts, please visit the Maryland Department of Natural Resources website. During the treatment process, boaters and other waterway users are asked to stay clear of the treatment boat so that the proper dosage of herbicide can be administered. Once applied, there are no recreational restrictions associated with the herbicide. Additionally, dive teams will be on the lake periodically throughout the summer, with divers in the water monitoring the hydrilla emergence and response to the herbicide. As a reminder, the Garrett County roads crew is replacing the bridge and the road and bridge closure will continue for approximately six weeks until bridge project completion. The planned closure is located approximately 1 mile from Bishoff Road intersection. Any questions can be directed to the Accident County Roads Garage at 301-746-8156.

The General Deep Creek Lake Property Owners Membership Meeting scheduled for August 28, 2021 has been canceled due to technical difficulties. It has been Re-scheduled for September 18, 2021 at 8:30 AM and will be held at Garrett Cinemas. There also will be a virtual option.
